Preventive and Diagnostic
A comprehensive oral evaluation is a thorough examination of your entire head, neck, mouth, teeth, gums, jaw joint, and bite. It typically includes a full set of radiographs (x-rays) which allow for a more complete examination. The information gathered during the comprehensive evaluation allows Dr. Berkal to partner with you to create your plan for oral health.

A dental cleaning helps maintain your oral health, keeps your breath fresh, and brightens your smile. Dr. Berkal integrates the latest technologies into cleaning visits to offer the highest level of comfort and care to her patients. A Velscope oral cancer screening exam is performed once a year as part of your cleaning visit. The health of your mouth determines the type of dental cleaning you will need. For healthy gums, a prophylaxis is performed. If we determine gum infection is present, a scaling and root planning is the most effective treatment.

Prophylaxis: This type of cleaning is traditionally done every six months. During this visit the hygienist uses a laser to perform a bacterial decontamination prior to your cleaning. We then comfortably clean plaque and tartar off your teeth and from under your gums using ultrasonic and hand instruments.

Scaling and Root Planing: This cleaning is done when a patient has severe gingivitis and/or periodontal disease. Plaque and tartar are removed from teeth, under the gums, and along root surface. Reducing bacteria and decreasing inflammation are important aspects of this procedure. Again, both ultrasonic and hand instruments are used to optimize patient comfort.

Occlusal guards offer a variety of benefits to patients that wear them. They protect the enamel on the biting surfaces of teeth as well as decrease the forces of clenching and grinding. An imbalance in the way teeth fit together and the improper position of the jaw can affect people in different ways. Some people get muscle pain and headaches.Others wear down, crack, or loosen their teeth. In extreme instances, some people actually damage the jaw itself.

If you have facial pain or any signs of damage on your teeth, Dr. Berkal can make a custom fitted guard for you. It can relieve your symptoms without use of medication and help protect your teeth.

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative
A crown is a dental restoration that completely covers the outside of a severely decayed or broken tooth. It is a strong and durable restoration that offers long term protection. Crowns that are made to restore back teeth are typically completed in one visit. Dr. Berkal always ensures the most natural look for front teeth. This process requires the tooth to be restored in two visits. During the first visit, the tooth is smoothed, an impression is taken, and you leave with a temporary crown. You will return a few weeks later so that Dr. Berkal can ensure your crown is the appropriate size, shape, and color. Once your dental crown is carefully secured in place, it will discreetly blend in with your surrounding teeth and allow you to smile with confidence.

A fixed bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring the replacement tooth or teeth to crowns on both sides of the space. It is something that stays in your mouth and does not need to be removed overnight. This form of tooth replacement allows you to chew food and speak as naturally as you would with your own teeth. Special tools for cleaning under the bridge are required. For some people, it is the perfect choice for tooth replacement.

A missing tooth can affect what you eat, how you speak, how your teeth come together, and most importantly, your confidence. Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple teeth, and sometimes all missing teeth. Dr. Berkal works with specialists who place the implant that serves as the root of your tooth. After this has healed, Dr. Berkal replaces the missing tooth that completes your smile. Implant crowns made by Dr. Berkal look like your natural teeth and are extremely durable. Implants are the most comfortable and permanent solution for missing teeth. They keep the jaw healthy and strong, allow you to enjoy the foods you love, speak normally, and smile with confidence.
A complete denture is an option for someone who has lost all of their teeth. Dr. Berkal uses functional impressions to make dentures that fit securely, look great, and feel comfortable. You wear the denture with the impression material. As you speak and eat, the material adapts to all the details of your mouth. This impression technique, along with Dr. Berkal’s expertise in the arrangement of the teeth, minimizes the need for adjustments.

A partial denture provides replacement teeth for patients who still have some remaining teeth.

All fillings wear out over time and teeth with larger fillings often need stronger protection. An onlay is a restoration that is made outside of your mouth. It covers the entire biting surface of a tooth and is custom fitted to cover any areas that are missing or need protection. Onlays are extremely durable and last much longer than traditional fillings. All healthy, tooth structure is preserved so it’s less invasive than a full crown but offers the same type of protection. Most importantly, they look beautiful and can be completed by Dr.Berkal in just one visit.
A small cavity or break in a tooth can be repaired with a direct composite bonding. A tooth colored, composite resin is carefully molded to the affected tooth or teeth and cured with a light.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic
Tooth whitening is a simple, non-invasive way to brighten your smile. Dr.Berkal offers a variety of methods to meet your whitening needs.

Laser whitening: This is the fastest way to whiten your teeth and is a great option if you want an instant result for an upcoming event or occasion. It is done in the office in about an hour. Dr. Berkal’s EPIC laser treatment lightens yellowed or discolored teeth.

Home whitening: Our patients love this option because it is extremely effective and allows you to control how bright you make your smile. We fabricate custom trays that precisely fit your teeth. They are extremely comfortable and allow you to whiten at your convenience in the comfort of your own home. Dr. Berkal has chosen a system which has a built-in desensitizer for optimal patient comfort.

Clear Correct is an orthodontic alternative to braces designed to straighten crooked teeth, using a series of custom aligners. This treatment slowly straightens teeth through a series of custom aligners, or plastic trays, that are prescribed based on each patient’s needs. Clear Correct aligners are worn continuously during treatment, except when eating, drinking, or teeth cleaning. Having straighter teeth can correct your bite, improve your gum health, and give you a gorgeous smile.
Veneers are an excellent way to improve the look of structurally sound teeth. Veneers are a very thin ceramic shell that covers your existing teeth. Veneers are able to improve the appearance of misaligned teeth, chips, cracks, stains, and close unsightly gaps between your teeth.

Dr. Berkal will discuss options and work with you to create a plan for your smile. Once this is determined, veneers are typically completed in two visits. It is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth because they are custom made for each patient. They are strongly bonded to your tooth so you have a beautiful, natural looking tooth for a very long time.

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure used to treat gum disease. During the scaling process, specialized dental instruments are used to remove dental plaque and calculus from beneath the gums. Planing is the procedure used to smooth the tooth’s root after the scaling process. Root planing helps the gums heal and reattach themselves to a cleaner and smoother root surface.
A root canal is a procedure that is done when the root of a tooth is infected. Dr. Berkal works with specialists who excel in performing root canal treatments. Once the root canal is complete, patients return to our office so that Dr. Berkal can restore and protect the tooth. Most commonly, we protect the tooth with a crown which is the strongest protection for the tooth.
If a tooth cannot be saved it will need to be extracted. Dr. Berkal focuses on making you completely comfortable during your extraction. Your tooth is thoroughly numbed and then gently loosened. Dr. Berkal is also able to incorporate laser technology during extractions to help keep your experience comfortable. If you would like to be sedated during extractions, we can refer you to an excellent oral surgeon.

The Tempo Mandibular Joint  (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. A disorder of the joint may cause pain, popping, clicking noises, difficulty chewing, or even locking of the jaw. Treatments are available to help you function comfortably. Dr. Berkal also offers laser pain therapy treatments which help minimize discomfort associated with TMJ disorders.

Sleep apnea is an ongoing condition that disrupts sleep. When breathing is paused, or becomes shallow, one will often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep, making the quality of sleep poor. Mild Sleep apnea can be treated with lifestyle changes, mouthpieces, and breathing devices. For moderate to severe sleep apnea, a breathing device called CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) or surgery may be used to treat the apnea. Dr. Berkal offers two types of treatment for Sleep Apnea that avoid the inconvenience of a breathing machine & the discomfort of surgery. The DNA appliance and Full Breath Solution appliances are both very effective.

The DNA system is a program designed to help people with snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The DNA appliance is comfortable, practical, and painless. The treatment does not require drugs, injections, surgeries, or the use of a CPAP machine. It often straightens teeth as it widens the airway.

The Full Breath Solution Appliance dramatically reduces snoring without risk of jaw problems. It lowers your tongue without moving the jaw, which opens the airway. Low pressure oxygen can be delivered through the Full Breath Solution appliance, which can dramatically improve health.

The connection between oral health and overall health is significant. Dr. Berkal is committed to supporting our patient’s overall well-being. She has completed training and certification and can expertly provide this unique service to patients suffering from nightly obstruction of their airway.

Specialized Techniques

CAD/CAM is an acronym that stands for computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing. Dr. Berkal uses a CEREC CAD/CAM machine to make restorations made outside of your mouth. This technology eliminates impressions and allows her to precisely restore teeth in one visit.
Lasers in dentistry allow many dental procedures to be done much more comfortably. Dr. Berkal uses WaterLase which is extremely versatile. It can be used for a wide range of hard and soft tissue procedures, removal of decay, cavity preparation, gum and bone surgical procedures, whitening, and much more. The benefits to our patients are tremendous. Lasers reduce damage to healthy portions of the tooth and minimizes trauma. Many gum procedures are completed with little or no bleeding, less post-operative swelling, and less need for pain medications. Lasers conserves more of the precious tooth structure you were born with, helping you to maintain your natural teeth longer! WaterLase does not generate heat, vibration or pressure therefore, many dental procedures can be performed nearly pain-free with less need for anesthesia.
Biomimetic dentistry is the rebuilding of teeth to be as natural, lifelike, and functional as possible. Simply put, biomimetic dentistry means to copy what is real. While traditional dental treatments are more invasive, Dr. Berkal feels it is in your best interest to only remove the damaged and decayed part of the tooth. Biomimetic restorations include small composite fillings and porcelain onlays that restore the biomechanics of broken and damages teeth. When restoring damaged, broken, and decayed teeth, Dr. Berkal’s goal is to return your tooth to its original strength, function, and esthetic appearance. Biomimetic dentistry accomplishes all of this in a conservative, strong, attractive method.
A frenum is an area of connective fibers found between the lip and gums or between the tongue and floor of the mouth. It is often necessary to re-contour the tissue to detach the fibers. This non-surgical procedure is done with a laser to eliminate the need for stitches. It comfortably releases the muscle fibers. Dr. Berkal performs this procedure on infants to allow them to feed more effectively and for children to improve their speech and aid in orthodontic correction. It is also done on adult patients to protect gum tissue and to allow a better fit for dentures.
